Coffee bags usually need a one-way degassing valve when freshly roasted coffee is packed soon after roasting. The valve lets carbon dioxide escape while helping limit outside oxygen from entering the pouch. Whether you need one depends on roast timing, coffee format, packing process, shelf life, and barrier requirements.
In my experience, the valve question should be answered together with the coffee, material, zipper, and filling process—not as a separate decoration choice.
When Does a Coffee Bag Need a Degassing Valve?
Freshly roasted coffee continues releasing carbon dioxide after roasting, especially during the first days.
A degassing valve is most useful when whole bean or ground coffee is packed soon after roasting and the pouch is sealed for storage or retail. It helps release internal carbon dioxide without requiring the bag to stay open, while the packaging material continues protecting the coffee from oxygen, moisture, and light.
This is the main reason coffee valves exist.
After roasting, coffee does not become completely stable immediately.
Gas continues to escape from the beans.
If the coffee is packed into a fully sealed bag too early, that gas can build up inside.
You may see:
- Pouch swelling
- Tight or distorted bags
- Pressure around the seals
- Poor shelf appearance
- More stress on the pouch structure
A one-way valve gives the gas a controlled exit path.
But the valve is not there to “keep coffee fresh” by itself.
That is an important point.
The pouch material still needs enough barrier performance.
For many coffee projects, high-barrier structures such as PET/VMPET/PE or aluminum-based laminates are used because coffee can be sensitive to oxygen, moisture, and light.

If the coffee is packed immediately or very soon after roasting, the valve becomes much more important.
If the coffee is allowed to degas before packing, the need may be lower.

Tell your packaging supplier how soon after roasting the coffee will be packed. “Fresh coffee” is not enough information—the packing timeline matters.

Where Should the Degassing Valve Be Placed?
Valve position affects both production and artwork, so it should be planned before the design is finalized.
A coffee degassing valve should be positioned away from the zipper, top heat-seal area, fold lines, and important artwork. It should sit high enough on the pouch to work well but leave enough clear space for valve insertion and pouch sealing.
This sounds like a small technical detail.
It is not.
The top part of a coffee pouch often contains:
- Top heat seal
- Tear notch
- Zipper
- Valve
- Logo
- Product name
- Roast information
That is a lot happening in a small area.
If the valve is placed too close to the zipper, production can become difficult.
If it is placed too high, it may enter the heat-seal area.
If it is placed directly over the logo, the valve can cover important design elements.
For many projects, I prefer keeping the valve clearly below the zipper area.
The exact distance depends on:
- Pouch size
- Zipper position
- Valve diameter
- Bag style
- Filling method
- Artwork layout

For example, a flat bottom pouch gives the designer more front and side-panel space, which can make valve placement easier.
A quad seal coffee pouch can also work very well when the brand needs stronger structure or a larger filling weight.

Common Mistake
Do not ask your designer to “put the valve somewhere near the top” after the artwork is finished. Confirm the valve position on the dieline before final approval.
The most attractive position is not always the best production position.
For me, function comes first.
Does a Valve Replace High-Barrier Coffee Packaging?
No. The valve and the packaging material solve different problems.
A degassing valve allows carbon dioxide to leave the bag, while the laminate provides the main protection against oxygen, moisture, aroma loss, and light. A coffee pouch still needs the correct barrier structure even when a one-way valve is used.
This is one of the most important points for coffee brands to understand.
A valve does not turn a low-barrier pouch into a high-barrier coffee package.
Think of the system like this:
Valve = gas management
Film structure = product protection
Both matter.
For freshly roasted coffee, oxygen exposure can reduce aroma and flavor quality over time.
That is why coffee packaging commonly uses metallized or aluminum barrier layers.

This is why I do not like choosing the valve first and the material later.
The coffee, shelf life, roast timing, packaging style, and filling process should all be considered together.

A good coffee pouch specification should include more than just bag size and valve requirement.
Before ordering coffee bags with degassing valves, confirm the coffee type, roast date, time between roasting and packing, filling weight, pouch style, dimensions, barrier structure, zipper, valve position, printing method, SKU count, quantity, and filling process.

- Time between roasting and packing
- Filling weight
- Pouch style
- Finished width and height
- Bottom or side gusset
- Material structure
- Required shelf life
- Standard zipper or pocket zipper

- Number of designs
- Quantity per SKU
- Digital or rotogravure printing
- Filling method
- Delivery country

Using a valve but choosing weak barrier film
The valve does not replace oxygen and moisture protection.
Placing artwork under the valve
Logos, roast names, and small text can become partially covered.
Copying another coffee brand's layout
Their bag size, valve, zipper, filling weight, and packing process may be different from yours.
