A flat base and side gussets help the filled pouch stand upright for retail display. Stability depends on the pouch dimensions, product weight and filling level.
Expanding gussets provide room for a range of dry products. Size the pouch around your product’s volume and target fill weight, then confirm the fit with samples.
Choose a material structure matched to your product’s moisture, oxygen and light sensitivity. Shelf-life performance also depends on filling conditions, seal quality and storage.
Front, back and side panels provide space for branding, ingredients and product instructions. Plan artwork around the pouch folds, seals and opening features.
Zipper options allow customers to close the pouch between uses. This is useful for multi-serving products such as coffee, snacks, pet food and powders.
Empty pouches can be stored flat before filling. Compare packed dimensions and carton quantities when planning warehouse space and deliveries.

A flat bottom pouch, also called a box pouch, is a flexible bag with a rectangular base and expandable side gussets. When filled, it forms a box-like shape with distinct front, back, side and bottom panels.
Compared with a typical bottom-gusset stand-up pouch, it offers a different base construction and panel layout. It is commonly used for coffee, snacks, pet food and powders. The right choice depends on your product volume, filling equipment and preferred shelf presentation.
Flat bottom pouches use a material structure selected for the product, filling process and storage conditions. Each layer serves a purpose; the complete structure determines barrier performance, sealing and durability.
Share your product type, target shelf life and storage conditions so we can discuss a suitable structure. Confirm performance through testing with your actual product.

| Accessory | Function | Selection Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resealable Zippers | Allow customers to open and reclose the pouch between uses. | Suitable for multi-serving products. Confirm zipper position and compatibility with your filling process. |
| Tin Ties | Hold the folded pouch opening closed after use. | Often used for coffee bags. A folded tin-tie closure does not provide an airtight seal. |
| Degassing Valves | Allow gas released by roasted coffee to escape while limiting outside air entry. | Assess the need based on your coffee, degassing period and packing process. |
| Pocket Zippers | Provide a pull-open access feature and allow the pouch to be reclosed. | Confirm the opening design, filling direction and initial sealing arrangement. |
| Tear Notches | Provide a starting point for tearing open the pouch. | Confirm their position relative to the top seal and zipper. They do not provide resealing. |

Plan your artwork around the pouch dimensions, material and order quantity. Confirm the dieline before designing so graphics and product information fit the finished pouch.
Before production, review the artwork proof for panel orientation, text, barcode placement and color references. Discuss a physical print sample if color matching is critical to your project.
| Sizing Factor | What to Provide | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Product & Fill Weight | Product type and intended weight per pouch. | Product density, shape and settling affect the space required. |
| Pouch Dimensions | Existing bag measurements, a drawing or a packaging sample, if available. | Confirm width, height and depth using the supplier’s dimensioned drawing. |
| Filling Method | Manual or machine filling, with equipment requirements where applicable. | Check the filling opening, equipment clearance and access for sealing. |
| Headspace & Closure | Preferred zipper, valve and opening arrangement. | Allow sufficient space above the product for filling, closing and a clean heat seal. |
| Display & Shipping | Shelf height limits and intended shipping carton, if known. | Check the filled pouch’s stability, outer dimensions and fit within the carton. |
| Sample Confirmation | Actual product for a filling trial. | Verify capacity, sealing, appearance and handling before approving the final size. |
Confirm with a filling trial: Fill a sample pouch with your actual product at the intended weight. Check the space above the product, zipper access, heat-seal area and upright presentation.
If you do not have confirmed dimensions, send us your product details, target fill weight and a photo or sample of your current packaging. We can discuss a starting size for sample evaluation.

Check the pouch in its filled condition when planning shelf display and shipping cartons. Product settling, fill level and closure position can affect the final shape and dimensions.
Use filled samples to assess upright stability, label visibility and carton fit before confirming your packaging specification.

| Planning Area | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Shelf Display | Check the filled pouch’s height, width and depth against the available shelf space. Confirm it stands upright at the intended fill weight. |
| Artwork Visibility | Review the filled pouch from the front and sides. Check that folds and curves do not obscure essential text or distort the barcode. |
| Carton Fit | Trial-pack filled pouches in the intended carton. Confirm pack count, orientation and protection against movement or compression during transport. |
Evaluate samples with your actual product before approving the final pouch specification. Confirm whether the samples match your proposed size, material and accessories, and note any differences.
